PACs have been around since 1944, when the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) formed the first one to raise money for the re-election of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. A Political Action Committee (PAC) is a popular term for a political committee organized by like-minded people for the purpose of raising and spending money to elect and defeat candidates. The PAC's money must come from voluntary contributions from members rather than the member's dues treasury. PACs represent business, labor or ideological interests. PACs can give $5,500 to a candidate committee per federal election (primary, general, run-off or special). They can also give up to $15,000 annually to any national party committee, and $5,000 annually to any other PAC. State and local candidates can only receive up to $500 per election (primary, general, run-off or special). PACs may receive up to $5,000 from any one individual.

RPAC is the muscle behind RAPB, FAR and NAR. RPAC represents 200,000 politically active REALTORS that members of Congress want as their friends. Recent legislative and regulatory successes include:

  • The continued preservation of the mortgage interest deduction.
  • Tax relief benefiting the real estate industry (getting Amendment Five, sales tax on services, off the ballot).
  • Improving federal mortgage programs, allowing more families to join the ranks of homeownership.
  • Eliminating burdensome regulations inhibiting environmental quality and healthy real estate markets.

Sponsoring local education programs for Realtors® such as the Wetlands Education Seminar and the Attainable Housing Seminar.

Have you given your fair share... contribute today!

RPAC Fundraising Committee

100% of your contribution is used to elect pro-REALTOR candidates: 30% of your contribution will be forwarded to National RPAC to fund key U.S. House and Senate races; 70% remains in the state to be used in state and local elections. RPAC is neither a Republican nor a Democratic organization. Your contribution to RPAC is a vote for a pro-REALTOR Congress, Florida Legislature and local government, regardless of political party.

Are contributions to RPAC tax deductible?
No. Contributions used for political purposes are not tax deductible on your federal income taxes.

Nationally

  • Enacted the $500,000 capitol gains exclusion on the sale of a principal residence, which equals a $755 boost in the average annual commission
  • Achieved penalty-free withdrawals of up to $10,000 from IRAs to be used for a down payment or closing costs of a home which increased the average Realtor® commission by $110
  • Continues support legislators who favor the mortgage interest deduction

    Statewide
  • Defeated a proposal to tax internet service providers, saving you $45
  • Saved $260 due to the defeat of a proposal to treat Realtors® as employees under the Workers Compensation Act.
  • Funded the successful fight against Amendment Five that would have allowed a small panel of legislators to create a tax on real estate commissions.
  • RPAC supported 134 out of 141 state legislators that were elected November 2002. This does not ensure that they will always side with Realtors®, but they know that this Association supports them and will always provide quality information about real estate issues.

Locally

  • RPAC helped fund an intensive study on the proposed Palm Beach County School Concurrency Plan. This analysis found serious flaws that would have caused serious delays in new schools being built. The County used this report to improve the plan.
  • Assisted in getting pro-business candidates elected that repealed a proposed sign ordinance in Boca Raton that would have required Realtors® to reduce the size of their signs, saving Realtors® several hundreds of dollars to replace.
  • Sponsored a Wetlands Education Program that brought Army Corps, South Florida Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection to discuss and work on the coordination of wetland regulation.
  • Funded an issue campaign to change the very restrictive county ordinance requiring all nine non-native plant species to be removed from all county property by 2006.
